in the after math of the san bruno fire. new information from merrill newman, detained by north korea. we know more about what he went through and how she doing now -- he is doing now. he is spending his days at a family home as he recovers from his forced stay in north korea. ktvu's robert handa talked with him and robert is live to tell us what merrill newman had to say. >> reporter: we are down the street near the beach where merrill newman is staying in santa cruz. i talked to him and on a day when he released information on what happened in north korea. now first of all he wanted to emphasize how happy he is to be back home with his family and in california. he let me take his picture of him as we talked to show people how healthy he looks and feels. he was cheerful and upbeat during our visit and said she doing very well and everything is good since he arrived back in the u.s. friday.

he released a statement today talking about what he went through after being detained. he helped train fourteen partsons but didn't the government would still consider that an issue. merrill newman said the words were not mine and were not delivered voluntarily and if he didn't cooperate he could be confined to jail for 15 years. some visiting family members said he could use some rest. >> he seems tired. you know, but that is to be expected. you know, it has bane long month, you know, probably emotionally taxing. seems okay. he will be fine. >> reporter: as merrill newman said earlier he plans to recover his strength and will share more details later, especially because he is realizing how much public interest there is in what happened to him.

breaking news, a roll over accident. the accident is just west of the golden gate bridge -- we have calls out to the chp, we will bring you more details as we get them. news chopper 2 show a number of emergency vehicles on the scene and it appears like one car right there may be upside down. i can't tell. but there is lot of activity and taking a look at the picture, that is a windy and narrow two lane road. it looks like the westbound lane, the road that takes you towards the pacific ocean is closed down by emergency vehicles. i can't tell if the other side of the road is open for traffic. you know it is narrow, windy. this is the road a lot of people take over the golden

gate bridge. again, a roll over accident forced the closure. we will bring you more information just as soon as we get it. a series of unsolved hit and run accidents in san francisco left one man dead and two seriously injured. ktvu's david stevenson looked into the crashes and talks to the police and family members searching for those responsible. >> reporter: she flew to san francisco to help find the hit- and-run driver who critically injured her son. >> he has brain trauma and a broken leg. >> reporter: he was struck tuesday night as he stepped off this curve. she is in search of surveillance video that might help catch the driver. >> there is a moral issue. if people think they could do

something and nothing happens, right? >> reporter: it was one of four hit and run accidents that followed no particular pattern. this marks the spot where a local artist was hit and killed early thursday by a dark four door sedan. a sachse tuesday morning -- a taxi tuesday morning struck and injured a bicyclist. police found the driver. police say the driver of a rental car hit a pedestrian. >> the suspect actually came out of the vehicle and moved the pedestrian out of the roadway and ran over the pedestrian's leg again. >> reporter: the hit and run cases highlight a wider problem on san francisco's increasingly crowded streets. >> we know three pedestrians are hit by car as day in san francisco and those stories go unreported. >> reporter: they are

distributing these flyers seeking help. the search for surveillance video hasn't turned up leads. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. in the east bay a busy intersection is causing concern among parents. coming up, the push to address the issue before someone gets hurt. police say mia cummings was arrested last month on suspicion of molesting a 14- year-old male students. police say it appears the abuse began when the child was 12. mia cummings worked that school since 2005 and parents were notified last week. the sheriff's deputy who shot and killed a boy is scheduled to return to work tomorrow but he is not expected to return to patrol duties. he shot and killed andy lopez

october 22. he thought he was holding an assault rifle when he shot him. the sheriff's department said he will be put on desk duty till the district attorney decides to file charges against him. a surf died early today as his home burned down. this morning firefighters were called to the home. this is video of the remains of the home still smoldering there as you can see. sheriff's deputies say he was found several houses away from the burning home in his crashed car. investigators say it appears he was driving away from the burning house when he died. the firefighters say it appears he suffered a heart attack which may have been brought on by smoke inhalation. an investigation is underway. police moved on to clean

authorities are looking for a 55-year-old man who disappeared from a care facility. staffers say he was last seen outside the facility yesterday afternoon. he was sitting in a wheelchair drinking coffee. the empty wheelchair was found 30 minutes later. he has a mental disorder. investigators are trying to identify human remains found off a hiking trail. the full skeleton was discovered here at the ranch regional park. ktvu's alex savage tells us there is no sign of foul play but the investigation has just begun. >> reporter: search and rescue was mobilized this morning to fan out where hikers found a

set of human remains along with a shoe. they were discovered in a dry creek bed. >> search and rescue will look -- check the area for remains, other evidence, clothing and evidence of foul play. >> reporter: he told me there is no way to tell the person's age or gender or how they died but they are volving here, looking at missing person's cases from the area. >> we will assume the worse till we prove otherwise. >> reporter: they will excavate the skull and bones bones and they to identify the person using dental records or dna. >> crazy. one of those gut feelings. i know what that is. >> reporter: he made the discovery around 2:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon. he was walking off a hiking trail with his two kids when they spotted the skull. now this park is blocked off as

where it is a cool 50 degrees. and at the bottom of your screen in oakland, 47 degrees. and there is another freeze warning for the bay area except san francisco. ktvu's chief meteorologist bill martin is monitoring the weather. you are here to tell us there is a change coming? >> yeah. the change is coming. i will tell you that in a few minutes. there is a change coming. you will like it. the thing to notice are the current temperatures. these are temperatures. in this napa area i got dew point temperatures, i got dew point temperatures in the teens. which means that typically the temperature can drop into the teens. over night lows tonight in napa -- tonight in napa, 19 degrees. we got the freeze warning in the bay area. you see it there. and then you have in the middle of the valley you have your hard freeze warning.

is double what usually goes out and more than the last time the record was set 15 years ago. san bruno city manager wonders if the pipelines can handle all the high pressure gas. >> till the records and the system has been verified and tested we won't rest. >> everything foot of our pipeline has been verified. >> the situation in san carlos demonstrates there remains issues of concern about what pg&e has in its records and in the ground. >> right now we have seen 75% of the supply that is meeting the demand today coming out of storage. >> reporter: that is good news for customers because pg&e bought that gas at low prices in the summer and stored it. the price you are paying for it is cheaper than if pg&e bought

stop sign in their neighborhood. the moms say that intersection is dangerous and it is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt there. ktvu's paul chambers joins us live from the intersection and you heard from the county about this today? >> reporter: crews came out and installed counters to the roadway. this is where it is happening. right now all that is out here is a crosswalk. it is hard to see people, especially add night, that is why -- at night, that is why they are worried. >> what is it going to take? going to take someone getting injured or dying? >> reporter: they have 8 children under the age of 10. they say for years they asked the county to take care of the

traffic issues here. officials told me they have been surveying the area for years. they repainted the stripes and had speed alert signs and added the school signs that was at her request. today the county took it up a notch by installing three magnetic can you tellers that will determine the vehicles and the speed. this is just one action before a stop sign could be added. they have to go through a warrant procedure before a decision can be made. >> i wish we didn't have to depend on collision data to convince the county we need this. i think the collision will come, it is just a matter of time. >> reporter: the county will monitor the area for 48 hours and will conduct other procedures before a decision is made. it still has to get approval so a decision is still months in

the making. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. only on 2 a ktvu poll shows a majority of californians are in favor of legalizing marijuana. 55% said they favor legalization. 31% want strict enforcement of existing laws. it is the first time in 44 years that a majority of californians backed legalization. the appeals court in san francisco heard arguments challenging california's dna collection requirement. the panel is reconsidering a lower court decision upholding the law. law requires police to collect dna from all felony suspects regardless of whether they are charged of a crime. the aclu alleges it is an invasion of privacy, the state says it helps solve cold cases.

two teen boys are accuse of using a replugugun to -- replica gun to carjack a woman to go joyriding. it happened yesterday afternoon. police say the suv was spotted minutes later and officers were able to catch 2 of the 3 suspects. they may be responsible for other robberies in the downtown area. the clean up is underway in dallas after a weekend of icy winter like weather. thousands remain without electricity but they hope to have it restored by tomorrow. warmer weather should move in over night still the headaches move east last night and into today. east coast airports had delays and cancellations. the wrap up on the weather

>> reporter: people aren't the only one effected. this deer had to be rescued after falling into a river. forecasters say from spring training new york -- from virginia to new york could see a quarter inch of ice. ktvu channel 2 news. nasty weather in texas and the east coast caused delays and cancellations here in the bay area. he had to brave the frosty weather to get here for the game yesterday at candlestick park. >> i have never seen that much ice and sleet in my life. i have lived in north dakota, i am used to winter but i have never seen that much. san jose had six flights canceled this morning.

family and friends of a missing san jose pilot are hoping for a miracle as they work with search and rescue volunteers in the idaho wilderness. they disappeared in a small plane december 1. there is hope they stumbled on shelter but the weather has been harsh and searchers are worried about more snow from a big storm that is expected later this week. it will be official tomorrow, san jose will have its permanent police chief but today we got a chance to sit down with him and ask tough questions. robert handa spent time with him to talk about what he thinks is the most important issues facing the force and the city. >> reporter: he has been the interim police chief for a year. tomorrow morning the city managers will recommend he be the permanent chief and he will take the job. >> reporter: you don't look like you are packing up and
